Johannes Vermeer - Focus on works in the Rijksmuseum

Vermeer's biography is murky. Only his birth, baptism and death are truly clear. Born in 1632 in Delft, baptized in October 1632, dead and buried in the Delft's Oude Kerk alongside Admiral Piet Hein.

The rest of his life is pieced together from public records and two accounts of meetings with Vermeer in people's diaries and letters. What we do know about Vermeer, we wonder how he paid for it. The records of Saint Luke;s Guild in Delft say that Vermeer joined the guild in December of 1653. At the time it was noted that he only paid 25% of the 6 florin guild fee. He completed paying the fee a full three years later.

Other records show that Vermeer took out a loan with his wife and witnessed other people's signing of loan contracts. In various documents he is referred to simply as Vermeer; in other documents someone decided to identify Vermeer as a painter.
