Rembrandt van Rijn is the best known Dutch painter world-wide. His "Nachtwacht" painting, or "Nightwatch," is the most famous painting on display at the Rijksmuseum. Rembrandt is known for popularizing Civic Guard paintings that were not simply poses. This style, also well used by Frans Hals, shows action and makes the characters look alive. Rembrandt's talent here is use of lighting to make the main characters look more present and alive than those in the background.
