Brugge, a view up Vlamingstraat from Grote Markt in Belgium

When an English speaking person says Brugge to a Dutch speaking person, the Dutch person may think you're saying Brussels (Bruxelle). They sound similar.

Some suggestions in Brugge:

My favorite hotel is the Hansa, assuming I can pay over $100/night for a room. It's worth it, because it's so close to the square, it's a high-end hotel, the coffee and breakfast is great, and they have a computer with high speed internet access that you can use for free, depending on availability. See my Brugge writeup (at the end of the page) for more information about the Hansa.

This is a budget hotel/hostel with private rooms, some with private baths. There may also be a dorm here, I don't know. Attached is a nice bar/restaurant downstairs with some reasonably good food. They are mentioned in a number of tour books as a cheap place to stay.

-- Hotel De Castillion Heilige-Geeststraat 1, 8000 Brugge Tel. : 050/34.30.01 Fax :050/33.94.75

This was more expensive ($100 if I remember, maybe less) but it's in a cool building next to a big church. I liked my room because it was clean, comfy. I haven't been there for years, but nothing seems to change that fast in Brugge.

------------

A l so there is a Novotel there, very antiseptic and modern. I think there is also a Best Western affiliate, but I really liked the Passage and the Castillion for ambience and location.

I have a link to the Brugge official home page on my links page, http://www.trackandtrain.com/links.html. Their site offers an interactive "tour" of Brugge similar to the Channels. .

They must see the Groeningemuseum (spelling?), great stuff. There are other important museums in Brugge too, plus some great art nearby in Ghent. Also, once in Brugge they may want to take the short trip to Oostende, on the ocean. It's about 20 km away, but I never made it there.

One last thing, there is a popular place called Bruges Beertje (I think). Their claim to fame is they have 300 types of beer available. They seem to be in all the tour books, but still retain a local flavor.
