The Blauwe Parade (the Blue Parade) is a must visit near Spui. It's the bar in the Poort van Clieve hotel. ![]() Medium size image Full size image These is the inside of Gall & Gall, a great liquor store with many locations. This one is next to the big Albert Heijn behind the Royal Palace on Dam Square. ![]() Medium size image Full size image Half-terrace seating at the Small Talk Eetcafe (see note Re: Small Talk below, regarding restaurants in general in Amsterdam) across van Baerlestraat from the Stedlijk Museum ![]() Medium size image Full size image Amsterdam is not Heaven -- bad comments about Small Talk Cafe reflect generally that Amsterdam is not a perfect place, and you must be careful with your credit cards. Here's what one emailer sent me: "I already live in Amsterdam and we had family visiting from Australia. We met them for lunch at Small Talk because we were then going to go to the Stedelijk Museum. Not only was the food just awful and expensive, they ran our credit card twice and a few weeks later another 75 euro charge showed up for a meal we had never eaten. My husbands signature had been forged and backwards for that matter. After weeks of phoning and whining, the credit card company finally (begrudgingly) returned our money but it was an utter hassle. You would never expect to get ripped off at such a wellknown establishment and basically not even the police were interested in doing anything about this. So it's fair warning. If you use a credit card, walk with the waiter to the register and watch him or her run it, no matter how popular and trustworthy the place seems. Hope this will save somebody else the hassle we had." The next point is best illustrated on Damrak and Leidsestraat. This idea about Amsterdam restaurants, paraphrasing the famous Dogbreath from the Amsterdam Channels, describes these tourist traps:: "Don't ever go into a restaurant with a hwaker out front encouraging you to eat there. If they need a hawker, it's because no local will eat there, so they exist by fooling tourists once." |
