![]() At First Glance He Looks Very Fierce, But He's Really A Nice Person Both this and "Even Though" were published by Fujiokaya Hikotaro. Both are half-length portraits which are composites of many human forms. This is called a yose-e, or "gather together picture." Notice in this case the hair and topknot is made up by a black figure holding a club. |

![]() Nichiren Going Into Exile xlg One of Kuniyoshi's best known prints, it was available over time in several editions. Snow falls from dark sky, this print appears to use both the gradient and no-ink methods to create snow. 36 Views of Mt Fuji Series From the Eastern Capital- Mount Fuji seen from beneath the bridge, Shin Ohashi xlg The 3776 meter peak of Mt. Fuji is seen in the background. As Shinto cults mingled with mountain-worshipping Shugendo Buddhists, Mt. Fuji became a sacred pilgrammage site and popular subject for artists. Kuniyoshi's 36 view series was never completely published. The poem in the scene, by Banshotei Gyokuga, reads, "With the lifting of the bamboo shade of the boat as it passes between the piers of the bridge, the fair Fuji brow which I longed to see comes into view." |
