De Boelhed - Vegetarian restaurant

There is a restaurant called De Boelhed (The Bowler Hat) that I think is excellent. They cater to vegetarian cooking and had the only real burrito I ever ate in Amsterdam. I wish I had a picture or even an address, I think it's Prinsengracht 65. They are in/near the Jordaan along one of the 4 central canals in Amsterdam. Great food.

Venezia Ristorante Pizzeria

Leidsestraat 89, just up from Leidseplein before Prinsengracht. Go past McDonalds and Burger King.

I am a part time vegetarian, and a falafel plate at this restaurant always cured the bad food blues. Their pizzas are inexpensive and insubstantial, so they only serve as a snack. Other menu items I have not tried. A bit tourist, again falafels were never dissapointing.

Maoz Falafel

Just another one of the many many falafel places in Amsterdam, this one's OK. It's on Leidsestraat just up from the McDonalds and Burger King.

#1 Recommendation -- Van Gogh Cafe

My favorite restaurant in Amsterdam is the Van Gogh Cafe. Many restaurants are expensive, charging 40 guilders for a dinner item. The Van Gogh costs less or the same as other restaurants, and the food is ALWAYS of high quality.

Breakfast is great and costs less! You can see the menu at the bottom of this page. Order the uitsmijter, an egg sanwich or get an omelette. The cheese sandwich is a great snack -- they always use high quality cheeses.

Dinner is excellent. I recently had a fish plate that was remniscent of the great Dutch marine and fishing tradtion.

Also you can visit Floris, the owner's dog. Floris will mooch, but don't feed him -- he wears a sign around his neck that asks you not to. Menus (see below) in English and Dutch.

There is nice outdoor seating as well as indoor seating. They are tourist friendly and speak excelent English and, of course, Dutch. The restaurant is located in one of the most upscale shopping districts at the corner of Hobbemastraat and

To get there, start out by facing the Rijskmuseum. Go to the right and you will be walking up Stadhouderskade.

Before the little square with the green pay phones, Jan Luikenstraat goes up to the left. Turn left up this street and follow it as it curves to the right, leading you to the Rijksmuseum tramstop on Hobbemastraat.

My friend owns the house on the corner across the street to the right at 22 Jan Luijkenstraat, you may want to rent a room there. I have a review a little ways down on my hotel page. Turn right onto Hobbemastraat so that you are walking away from the tramstop. The Van Gogh Cafe is on the next corner to the right.

Here is the menu and drink card, warning it's a big file (222Kb and 73Kb)
